Facebook Groups are the platform's real product now. Its redesign finally says so
The app's new home tab leads with communities, not the News Feed.
Ask people why they still open Facebook and the answer is rarely the News Feed. It is the neighborhood buy-and-sell group, the parents of a particular school, the people restoring the same old truck. The latest redesign of the app finally organizes itself around that reality.
The new home tab puts communities first, with activity from your groups ahead of posts from pages and public figures. Group admins get better tools for welcoming new members, pinning resources and running events.
Following the users
This is less a reinvention than a catch-up. Groups have been Facebook's healthiest corner for years. They are where people still post, still ask questions and still show up for each other. The feed, by contrast, has become a mix of viral video and posts from accounts nobody remembers following.
The moderation question
Leaning on groups means leaning on volunteer moderators, who already do an enormous amount of unpaid work. Their burden only grows if groups become the front door. How well the company supports them will decide whether this redesign feels like a renewal or just a reshuffle.
