Social

Nextdoor tries to make the neighborhood app less of a complaint board

Local news partnerships and kinder prompts are part of a long-running reset.

Nextdoor
Nextdoor wants neighbors to find more than lost-cat posts and parking disputes.

Every neighborhood has one: the post about fireworks, the thread about a suspicious car, the argument about leaf blowers that runs to two hundred replies. Nextdoor would like to be known for something else.

The company has been adding local news, more useful recommendations and prompts that nudge people to rethink a heated reply before posting. The goal is a feed that feels like a helpful neighbor rather than a grumpy one.

Kindness by design

Small interventions can matter. A prompt that asks whether a post might come across as hurtful does not stop anyone from posting, but it gives people a moment to cool off. Nextdoor says those nudges change a meaningful share of posts.

Hyperlocal social is hard. Neighbors are not friends, and they disagree about a lot. Nextdoor's reset is a reminder that the most local app on your phone may also be the hardest one to get right.
