Reddit's answers engine is eating its own front page
More visitors arrive from search with a question than to browse. Moderators feel the shift.
Add “reddit” to the end of a search and you get answers from real people. Millions of people have learned that trick, and it has changed what Reddit is. More visitors now arrive with a question than with time to browse.
Reddit has leaned in with tools that summarize threads and surface the best answers. For a newcomer looking for a good budget vacuum, it is a gift. For the communities that wrote those answers, it is more complicated.
Visitors, not members
Search traffic tends to read and leave. It rarely subscribes, comments or joins the culture of a subreddit. Moderators report more drive-by questions that the sidebar already answers, and fewer new regulars.
Keeping the front page alive
Reddit's challenge is turning askers into members. If it cannot, it risks becoming a library of old answers rather than a living place where new ones get written.
